Ingredients and substitutes
- Bread – You can use any type of bread – white bread, whole-grain bread, or tortilla. So pick your favorite bread.
- Avocado – Use fresh, ripe avocado and cut it just when you are ready to prepare the spread because avocado oxidizes quickly
- Eggs—For the hard-boiled egg, add the eggs to cold water and bring the water to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes, then turn off the heat, cover, and let it rest for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, you can peel and grate the egg. Tip: Adding a slice of lemon to the water when boiling helps peel the eggshells easily.
- Sour cream – For making sandwich fillings. I use about 20% sour cream. You can also use cream cheese, Greek yogurt, cheddar cheese, or mayo.
- Lemon juice – Prevents the avocado from oxidizing. It is always best to use fresh lemon juice.
- Herbs – We like cilantro, but parsley or green onion leaves work great too. Finely chop the herbs. A few torn basil leaves add a nice, refreshing flavor too.
- Optional ingredients – A teaspoon of Dijon mustard is a wonderful addition.
