Cheesy Garlic Parmesan Twist
Garlic parmesan twists are savory, crispy delights made with puff pastry, roasted garlic butter, and Parmesan cheese. Their light, flaky texture and rich, aromatic flavor make them an irresistible crowd-pleaser. They are perfect for any occasion.

Roasted garlic transforms simple cloves into sweet, caramelized nuggets of flavor, offering a rich, mellow taste that enhances any dish. The roasting process softens the garlic, turning it into a spreadable delight that can be mixed into butter, stirred into sauces, or enjoyed on its own. Puff pastry is a versatile, flaky dough made by layering butter and dough through a series of folds.
When the sweet, caramelized goodness of roasted garlic meets the nutty, savory punch of Parmesan cheese atop buttery, flaky puff pastry, the result is a culinary delight. The roasted garlic butter spreads a rich, aromatic flavor through each twist of pastry, and the Parmesan adds a deliciously crisp, golden topping. This harmonious blend of flavors and textures creates an irresistible treat perfect for any occasion. You can serve it as a snack, appetizer, or part of a larger meal.
Why make these twists?
- Flavorful Roasted Garlic Butter: Roasting the garlic brings out a sweet, caramelized flavor that pairs perfectly with the buttery puff pastry. Thus creating a rich and aromatic filling.
- Crispy and Flaky Texture: Using puff pastry ensures that the twists are light, airy, and wonderfully crispy. Each bite offers a satisfying crunch with a delicate, flaky texture.
- Easy and Quick to Make: This recipe is incredibly easy to prepare with store-bought puff pastry and simple ingredients. So it’s perfect for a quick snack, appetizer, or party treat without spending hours in the kitchen.
- Visually Appealing: The golden twists sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds look elegant and enticing. They add a touch of sophistication to your table, impressing guests with taste and presentation.

Ingredients and substitutes
- Puff Pastry: Provides a light, flaky, and crispy base for the twists. You can use homemade puff pastry or crescent roll dough for a slightly different texture.
- Garlic: Adds a rich, sweet, and aromatic flavor when roasted. You can also use garlic powder (use sparingly) or jarred roasted garlic for convenience.
- Olive Oil: Used to roast the garlic, enhancing its flavor and aiding in caramelization. You can also use any neutral oil (e.g., vegetable oil) or melted butter for a richer flavor.
- Unsalted Butter: Combined with roasted garlic to create a flavorful spread for the puff pastry. Use salted butter (reduce added salt) or margarine for a dairy-free option.
- Parmesan Cheese: Adds a nutty, savory flavor and helps create a crispy texture. You can also use Grana Padano, Pecorino Romano, or nutritional yeast for a vegan option.
- Egg (for Egg Wash): Provides a glossy finish and helps the sesame seeds adhere to the twists. You can use milk, cream, or a mixture of water and a little honey or maple syrup for a vegan glaze.
- White and Black Sesame Seeds: Add a nutty flavor, crunch, and visual appeal. You can also use poppy seeds, chia seeds, or flax seeds for a different texture and appearance.

Step-by-step: Cheesy Garlic Parmesan Twist
- Roast the Garlic: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the top off the head of garlic to expose the cloves. Next, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Wrap in foil, and roast for 30-35 minutes until the garlic is soft and golden.

- Garlic butter: Allow to cool slightly, then squeeze the roasted garlic cloves out of their skins into a bowl. Then, mash the roasted garlic with the softened butter and season with salt and pepper to taste.

- Prepare the Puff Pastry: Preheat (or reduce) the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to smooth out any creases. Spread the roasted garlic butter evenly over the entire surface of the puff pastry. Then, sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the garlic butter.
- Shape the Twists: Fold the puff pastry in half, pressing gently to seal. Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut the pastry into 1-inch-wide strips. Next, twist each strip gently to create the twists, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Finishing Touches: Brush each twist with the beaten egg to give them a glossy finish. Then, sprinkle the white and black sesame seeds evenly over the twists.
- Bake: Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until the twists are golden brown and puffed. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes
-
- Use High-Quality Puff Pastry: Opt for high-quality puff pastry to ensure the best texture and flavor. If possible, choose all-butter puff pastry for superior taste and flakiness.
-
- Properly Roast the Garlic: Ensure the garlic is roasted until soft and golden brown. This enhances its sweet and mellow flavor, which is key to the recipe. If pressed for time, you can roast the garlic ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator.
-
- Evenly Spread the Garlic Butter: Spread the roasted garlic butter evenly over the puff pastry to ensure every twist is packed with flavor. Uneven spreading can lead to some twists being bland while others are overly rich.
-
- Chill the Pastry Before Cutting: After spreading the garlic butter and adding Parmesan, chill the pastry in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes before cutting. This firms up the butter and makes the pastry easier to cut and twist.
-
- Twist Firmly but Gently: When twisting the strips, do so firmly enough to hold the shape but gently to avoid tearing the pastry. Aim for an even twist along the entire length of the strip.
-
- Use an Egg Wash for a Glossy Finish: Brushing the twists with a beaten egg wash before baking will give them a beautiful golden-brown color and help the sesame seeds adhere better.
-
- Bake Until Golden Brown: Bake the twists until they are puffed and golden brown. This ensures they are cooked through and have the desired crispy texture. Watch closely towards the end to prevent over-browning.
-
- Serve Fresh: These twists are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven when they are at their crispiest. If you need to make them ahead, you can reheat them briefly in a hot oven to restore some of the crispness.
-
- Experiment with Flavors: Feel free to experiment with additional herbs or spices in the garlic butter, such as fresh parsley, thyme, or a pinch of chili flakes, to add a unique twist to the recipe.
-
- Uniform Cutting: Ensure the strips are cut evenly to promote uniform baking. Using a ruler or measuring guide can help achieve consistent widths for each twist.
