  1. I am making a treehouse cake and want to use rice cereal as the trunk of the tree and then a thin round wood board with cake on top to be the leaves of the tree. Do u think the rice cereal will support the weight? Or is there a better option?

    1. Hey Abby. The rice cereal is a great idea for the tree trunk but it is not the support system for the cake. You will need a cake board with a center rod first. Then use the rice krispy as your trunk. Hop that makes sense. I think what you are doing is similar to my treehouse cake?

      1. Yes that is similar to what I’m doing.. could you explain more what rods to use and how to use build a support with boards and rods? Do u have any pics with just the support before everything is decorated? Do you mold the cereal treats around the rods? How do they stay?

  2. HI I am going to use your recipe to make a hot air balloon topper for a shower cake I have never used rkt for cakes before I am going to cover with fondant do I need to cover the rkt with something else first?

    1. Hey Linda. Yes, the rice Krispies need to be sweet so you can fill gaps with ganache, buttercream or fondant. That way you will have a smooth finish with the fondant. Or else the fondant will show all the bumps and dips. I hope that makes sense.

  3. Hi from Australia 🙂
I am making a pirate ship cake for my son’s birthday and was wondering how far in advance can I make the RKT and carve it into shape? How long does it stay fresh if it’s sealed up? And is it best at room temperature or in the fridge?
    Thanks

    1. Hey Anita, I’d say keep for 2 to 3 days in the fridge. Make sure to wrap well so it does not absorb smell of other foods from the oven.
      Thanks

      1. I’m making a barn cake topper ! Once I make this am I able to come back later and still Mold it ?

        1. Taylor. As it dried it gets stiffer so it becomes difficult to mold. I suggest molding it while it is still warm.

  4. Love your recipes..
I’m planning to make Avenger theme cake with a thor ? topper for my nephew . Rkt is quite expensive and thought of an alternative puffed rice called pori a cheap alternative. Can I use jaggery instead of marshmallow s for binding it? There s an indian snack called pori urandai made during festivals ..uses puffed rice and jaggery to mold to balls..

    1. Hey Elsa. You can definitely use puffed rice – I am not sure about jaggery! Will it dry and hold shape? If yes, then yes, you can use it.

      1. Thank you so much for replying … should i apply any medium before covering with fondant..?ganache.. buttercream.or what about edible glue??

        1. Yes, the ganache will give you a smooth surface. You can just use water too but it will take the texture of the rice krispies.. I hope that makes sense

Dear Veena, I just come across your sSite. I was looking for recipe to make a globe cake , using the base with rice Krispies n marshmallows. I found yours, I understand it ,too. will try but must watch the one you did before . Thank you so much

  6. Hi Veena,
Thank you for the recipe! You are so talented, love your work. I need to make a RCT structure 1-2 weeks in advance. Could I make the entire structure according to your recipe and cover with fondant and then freeze? Or should I omit the butter, just use RCT and chocolate and cover with fondant and just cover it at room temperature—will either way still be edible? It is cool where I live so humidity is no issue. Thank you in advance!

    1. Hey Jeannine. You can use RCT with just chocolate but it would be very brittle so there is a possibility of it flaking or chipping off. The marshmallows tend to give them a better hold. You can make them in advance and freeze them for 2 weeks and yes, if frozen they will still be edible. At room temperature, they will hold but perhaps not edible.

Hi Veena, I’ve made a sculpted fist out of rice crispie treats using marshmallow and unsalted butter, I’ve sculpted it, covered it in buttercream and set it in the fridge over night and covered in fondant . I need it for on a cake. I started making it Saturday and Sunday this week and I’m putting it on a cake for next Saturday so a week. Will the treat still be ok with regards to the buttercream, I’ve kept it in a cake box in a cool cupboard in my kitchen.
    Many thanks
    Pam

    1. Hey Pamela. Buttercream outside the fridge for 3 to 4 days is ok usually. But it depends on the recipe you use. If you have milk products in there then less long but if it’s only butter and sugar perhaps longer. But over one weeks sounds like it may not be a great idea to eat. You can still probably use it as a cake topper but I would not recommend eating it.

Hi Veena. I am going to use the rice crispie/marshmallows for the first time to make some rolling mountains. If I am not using the chocolate, do I substitute the same amount with marshmallows?

    Many Thanks

  10. Thank you! One more quick question can I just put fondant directly onto the Rice Krispie shape… this friend does not like ganache?

    1. You can Irene, just make sure you have made the buttercream smooth before you put the fondant on. Any bumps or unevenness on the Rice Krispies will be seen thru the fondant.
