One of the first things I do at the start of fall is to make my homemade spice mixes such as my pumpkin, gingerbread, and chai spice.
Of course, pumpkin spice means you must make a latte. This week, I made both the hot as well as this iced latte.
Why make this latte
This recipe is very simple and gets ready in five minutes. The best part is, that it is versatile and you can tweak it any way you like.
- I am using regular 2% milk for this latte. But, almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk would also be delicious.
- I am using canned pumpkin puree. And yet, feel free to use homemade if you have.
- You can use a strong espresso coffee if you like your latte strong. I am using regular instant coffee.
- To sweeten, I like using honey or maple syrup. But, brown sugar has a wonderful molasses flavor and color too.
- Today, I topped my latte with whipped cream because it looks so fancy and pretty. But, usually, I just have mine as is without any whipped cream on top. Just a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg works for me. You can even top it with milk foam.

Yes, years ago the original latte by Starbucks had no pumpkin puree in it. Later, the recipe changed over the years. I think the pumpkin puree adds a nice flavor. But yes, you can omit it in this spice latte.
This spice does not have anything to do with pumpkins. It's just a blend of warm spices that go well with pumpkin recipes. And yet, you can easily use other spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ground ginger, cloves, etc.
You can make your own mix with just a few pantry staples. But, you can also use any or as many of these spices - ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground ginger, ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg, ⅛ teaspoon cloves, ⅛ teaspoon cardamom spice.
Commercial latte is loaded with sugar. So, even if you add skimmed milk it still does not make it healthy. Instead, make it at home and use honey or maple syrup. That way, you can afford these lattes more often.
You can serve a hot or cold latte. Try my pumpkin spice latte cake.
