Why is this the best recipe?
- Flavorful Seasonings: The combination of chili powder, cumin, and paprika gives the ground beef a rich, savory flavor that is enhanced by the caramelized onions and garlic.
- Versatile Toppings: The salsa and guacamole add freshness and texture to the tacos, while shredded lettuce, cheese, and sour cream provide additional layers of flavor and creaminess.
- Simple Preparation: This recipe is easy to prepare and requires no special cooking skills or equipment, making it perfect for home cooks of all levels.
- Family-Friendly: Ground beef tacos are a hit with both kids and adults, making them a great family meal option.
Ingredients and substitutes
- Ground Beef: Provides the main protein component and savory flavor. Substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
- Onion and Garlic: Add aromatic flavor to the ground beef. You can also use shallots instead of onions and garlic powder instead of fresh garlic.
- Tomatoes: Used in the salsa for freshness and acidity. You can also use canned diced tomatoes if fresh tomatoes are not available.
- Cilantro: Adds a fresh, citrusy flavor to the salsa and guacamole. If you’re not a fan of cilantro, you can also use parsley as a substitute.
- Jalapeño: Adds heat to the salsa. Substitute with other hot peppers or omit if you prefer a milder salsa.
- Lime: Adds brightness and acidity to both the salsa and guacamole. You can also use lemon juice as a substitute.
- Avocado: The main ingredient in guacamole is avocado, which provides creaminess and a rich flavor. You can also use mashed peas or Greek yogurt as a substitute for avocado.
- Taco Shells: Provide a crunchy vessel for the taco filling. You can also use soft tortillas instead for a different texture.
- Lettuce, Cheese, Sour Cream: Traditional taco toppings that add texture, flavor, and creaminess. Use dairy-free cheese and sour cream for a vegan option.
- Taco seasoning – This is very easily available in most supermarkets these days on the spice rack. But you can also make it yourself with:
- 1 tsp chili powder,
- 1/4 tsp each of garlic and onion powder,
- 1 tsp cumin powder,
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano,
- 1/2 tsp crushed chili flakes, and
- 1/4 tsp each of salt and black pepper.

Step-by-step: Ground beef tacos
- Ground Beef – Add the oil to a skillet over medium heat and saute the ground beef until no longer pink. Use a spatula to break the meat apart so you don’t have big lumps. Next, add the onions and garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent. Then, add the tomato paste and taco seasoning. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes. Next, add the parsley and lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Cook until all moisture is evaporated. Taste and adjust seasoning. And set aside.

- Salsa: In a medium bowl, combine the cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, jalapeño (if using), lime juice, and salt. Mix well and set aside.

- Guacamole – Cut the avocados in half and remove the pits. Then, scoop the flesh into a bowl and mash with a fork. Next, add the onion, cilantro, sour cream, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

- Assemble – Heat the taco shells according to the package instructions. Fill each taco shell with a spoonful of the ground beef mixture. Top with shredded lettuce, cheese, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. Serve immediately and enjoy!
