Fondant drapes are the in thing on cakes now especially wedding cakes. They look really elegant and make a great statement on fashion inspired cakes. I made this for a wedding cake and dressed the drapes with my two tone gumpaste roses as well.

Today I wanted to share with you this beautiful wedding cake I made. The cake itself is kept simple in white. This is my Vanilla Creme Cake recipe with Velvet Vanilla Buttercream and Homemade Fondant Sugarpaste.

The roses are two tone so they start with golden yellow centers and then fade out to almost white. I love the glow it gets from the golden yellow.

I wanted to share with you how I make drapes on this cake. They are pretty simple and easy.

How to make fondant drapes on cakes

  • I use 50/50 which is 50% gum paste and 50% fondant. That way it’s not too soft and not too stiff.
  • Use some dowel sticks for the folds and some luster dust for the satin look.

  • Roll out the paste to a rectangle shape and cut out any extra. Roll it fairly thin as this will give you that fabric effect.
  • Brush fondant with luster dust until nice it has the look of  velvet.

  • Place some dowels under the paste as you can see in the progress pictures.
  • Using your fingers – run them along the dowels to form the paste so the pleats stay.
  • Let set for about 3 minutes not too long or you will have crack. Just enough so they hold the drapes.

  • Remove the dowels and  gather up the pleats to place on the cake.
  • You can either place them as one long piece or cut them to the lengths you need.
  • You can place them length ways like I have on this cake.
  • Double them up to make a big bunch of drapes…. making sure you cover the seams well.

I made two of the same rectangles and place them besides each other. Then dressed the seams with roses.
