- Simple yet Elegant Presentation: Baking the potatoes in a muffin pan creates beautifully stacked portions that are perfect for serving at any gathering or dinner party, making them both visually appealing and easy to serve.
- Customizable Seasoning: This recipe allows for flexibility with seasoning. You can easily adjust the herbs and spices to suit your taste, making it a versatile dish that can pair with various cuisines.

Ingredients and substitutes
- Potatoes: Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes are ideal for this recipe due to their texture and flavor. You can also use sweet potatoes for a sweeter variation.
- Butter: Unsalted butter adds richness and helps achieve a crispy texture. If you prefer, you can substitute with olive oil for a lighter, slightly different flavor.
- Parmesan Cheese: Provides a savory, nutty flavor that enhances the dish. Pecorino Romano or Gruyère cheese can be used as alternatives for a different taste profile.
- Garlic Powder: Adds a subtle garlic flavor. Fresh minced garlic can be used for a stronger taste, or you can try onion powder for a milder, sweeter flavor.
- Dried Thyme: Brings an earthy, herbal note to the dish. Substitute with rosemary, oregano, or Italian seasoning based on your preference.
- Salt and Pepper: Essential for seasoning and bringing out the flavors. For a unique twist, try using seasoned salt or a blend of your favorite spices.

Tips for success
- Use a Mandoline for Even Slices: Ensure the potato slices are uniform in thickness by using a mandoline. This helps them cook evenly and creates a consistent texture in each stack.
- Don’t Skip the Butter: The melted butter is crucial for achieving that golden, crispy exterior. Make sure each slice is well-coated to enhance the flavor and texture.
- Pack the Stacks Tightly: When assembling the stacks in the muffin pan, press the potato slices down firmly. This helps them hold together and ensures a more cohesive, compact stack.
- Monitor the Baking Time: Keep an eye on the potatoes as they bake. If the tops are browning too quickly, cover the pan with aluminum foil to prevent burning while allowing the centers to cook through.
- Rest Before Serving: Let the potato stacks cool for a few minutes before removing them from the muffin pan. This brief rest helps them firm up, making it easier to remove and serve them without falling apart.

Frequently asked questions
These are best served fresh, soon after they are made. But leftovers will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Soaking the starchy potatoes in water for a few minutes will help remove all the starch. Personally, I like to pat the slices dry because the little starch left behind will help stick the slices together.
Cooking potatoes with foil cooks them faster but also makes them softer. I prefer to have them crispier, so I cook them without foil.
