  1. Hello! I’ve tried this recipe for the first time, and it’s still a bit sticky after taking out of the fridge after a few hours. How do I make it less sticky?
    Thanks! 🙂

    1. Anne, knead with vegetable shortening on your hands as it strengthens elasticity, and then add as little as necessary powdered sugar.

      1. Thanks for your advice Veena! My gumpaste actually became very firm when I made it too. So should I use less icing sugar next time? Or add more water ?

        1. First, knead it with veg shortening. Then use damp hands – in most cases that’s all you need to do.

  4. Question:
Once the flowers are made and dried, how long are they good for and what is the best way to store dried sugar flowers?

    1. Gumpaste flowers can last a few years but it depends on the weather. Here in the middle-east, the humidity is too high so they don’t last more than a few months and in rainy weather not more than a few weeks. Hope that helps. The best way to store them is to put them in breathable cardboard boxes. I use shoe boxes

  5. This recipe turn out too hard, I don’t know what I did wrong. Was I suppose to add all the remaining sugar even if the gumpaste was already hard??

    1. Hey Karen. Was the gum paste was hard when you made it or later after storing it?
As the recipe states, you will need a few tablespoons of water to keep it pliable.
And you need to ensure you store it properly wrapped, so it does not get hard.
You can still knead this with moist hands to make it pliable. If necessary place it in the microwave for 10 seconds to soften it a bit.
      Hope this helps.

      1. It was hard when I made it. I added 3 tbsp of water and still hard. Can I add more water?

        1. You can add more water but I highly recommend you knead with vegetable shortening instead. That will make it stretchy and give you more pliability. You can use a few tablespoons of water as well. Sorry, since I can’t see it I’m not sure what to suggest.
Is it crumbly? if you break it – does it crumble?
Reason is – I’m afraid that if the powdered sugar is more, the CMC might be less.

Mine was also incredibly dry before I even added half the sugar. The only illustration I saw was for the recipe with egg whites which were wetter from the beginning due to the egg whites. similar illustrations with this recipe might be helpful. I’m just going to stop adding sugar and do some vegetable shortening. This is totally experimental as I don’t know if I have the ability to make the butterflies I was going to try anyway. All my cakes are for practice anyway thanks to my friends letting me practice for their special occasions. I will come back to comment how it turns out after sitting over night. Also, since you have mentioned that the gum paste once made into shapes won’t do well in the fridge, do we just add these last minute to the cake? I appreciate the help with high humidity conditions as I live in the southern US and struggle to get figures to maintain their integrity.

      1. Joy, you can add a little more water if necessary. The most important is to make sure you have a sticky mixture, which activates the meringue powder similar to egg whites powder. I just updated with a few more tips. Thanks for brining this to my attention.

Can we replace the corn syrup with liquid glucose.
