½cup(110g)Sliced pepperoni or your choice of pizza toppings (optional)
¼cupChopped fresh basil (optional)
Egg wash
1Egg yolk
1tspWater
Instructions
Tomato sauce - In a small saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce over low heat for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and let it cool.
1 cup Crushed tomatoes, ¼ tsp Dried oregano, ¼ tsp Dried basil, ¼ tsp Garlic powder, ½ tsp Salt and pepper to taste
Dough - In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and eggs. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk mixture and add the butter, followed by the flour and salt. Knead the dough for 5 to 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
3 ¼ cups All-purpose flour, ¼ cup Granulated sugar, 2¼ tsp Active dry yeast, ½ tsp Salt, ½ cup Unsalted butter, ¾ cup Warm milk (110°F or 43°C), 2 large Eggs
Rise- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Roll - Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two equal portions. Roll one portion of the dough into a 12-inch circle on a lightly floured surface. Place the rolled-out dough on the prepared baking sheet.
Filling - Spread a thin layer of the homemade tomato sauce (about 1/4 cup) over the dough, leaving a small border around the edge. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, and your choice of pizza toppings (if using) evenly over the sauce. Roll out another portion of dough into a 12-inch circle and place it on top of the first layer.
1 ½ cups Shredded mozzarella cheese, ½ cup Grated Parmesan cheese, ½ cup Sliced pepperoni or your choice of pizza toppings (optional), ¼ cup Chopped fresh basil (optional)
Cut - Place a round object (such as a glass or small bowl) in the center of the dough to create a small circle. This will be the center of your star. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into 16 evenly spaced strips, starting from the edge of the center circle and stopping at the outer edge.
Shape - Take two adjacent strips and twist them away from each other twice, then press the ends together to form a point. Repeat this process for all the strips to create the star shape.
Egg wash - In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and water. Brush this mixture over the entire surface of the star bread.
1 Egg yolk, 1 tsp Water
Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until the star bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve - Allow the Christmas Star Bread to cool briefly before slicing and serving. Garnish with chopped fresh basil, if desired.
Enjoy your delicious Christmas Star Bread with pizza filling! It makes a stunning centerpiece for your holiday table.
