How to Make a mulled red wine at home this Winter

Homemade Mulled Wine

This is the easiest mulled wine recipe you can make and the perfect way to celebrate winter. The ingredients and very simple and probably already in your pantry. The best thing about this recipe is that it is very versatile and customizable. Omit any of the ingredients you don’t like, or bump the ones you like. The drink is served warm in heatproof mugs.

  • 750 ml Red wine
  • 2 strips Lemon zest
  • 2 strips Orange zest
  • 2 slices Orange rounds
  • 2 slices Apple rounds
  • 2 Cinnamon stick
  • 2 Star anise
  • 4 Cloves
  • 2 Cardamoms optional
  • 4 tbsp Honey or maple syrup
  • 120 ml Brandy


  • In a saucepan, over medium heat, combine all the ingredients.
  • Let it come to an almost boil, then, immediately reduce the heat to a low simmer. DO NOT BOIL – you don’t want the alcohol to evaporate.
  • Let simmer on low for 15 minutes or up to 2 hours.
  • Taste and adjust sweetness. If necessary, add more maple syrup or honey.
  • Remove from the heat.
  • Strain through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
  • Let cool.
  • Mulled wine is served warm (use heatproof mugs).
  • Use the ingredients in the mulled wine to serve as garnishes.
