An emoji cake can be a fun cake for any kid, boy or girl at any age. Today, I share how to make an emoji cake tutorial for standing Meh. If you are new and not into cake structure make him sitting down and if your feeling adventurous, have a go at a standing emoji cake using my detailed instructions.

Have you seen the new movie 'Emoji Me'? My kids love that movie. We've watched it a few times already since it has been out. Aadi just loves this guy Meh!
How much fun is this cake? I made it for Aadi's birthday and it was definitely a fun cake to make. I was a bit nervous about the cake structure at first, you know I don't really do many gravity-defying cakes like this often.
So Aadi and Rhea have their birthdays a month apart from each other. Aadi is on the 8th of May and Rhea is on the 3rd of June. So you can imagine how busy my May and June months are.
The advantage of being a mom cake decorator
My kids see me make cakes the whole year round and often they are excited about a cake which usually is for a customer. Well, they are kids so often they love the cake so much, they will say, 'mama for my birthday I want you to make this cake for me'. By the time it's their own birthday, they have a few cakes on their list some I made and some new ideas.
So, what ends up happening is that they plan on more than one cake. Aadi had this cake for his birthday celebration party which we hosted at the end of the month. For school, he had a dog cake which was celebrated in school the week of his birthday. Of course, on the day of his birthday, we had a Rainbow lollipop drip cake as well. Are you counting? Well, that's three cakes for one birthday boy in one month. Oh, my Rhea had her share of three cakes too! Lucky I am a cake decorator so this is as much fun for me to make as it fun for them to have.
That's the benefit of having a mom cake decorator, right?

Now, I must admit I LOVE how this emoji cake turned out. And this guy Meh in the movie is so adorable that the kids could actually see him in the cake. The whole party, the kids kept laughing about the movie and watching clips of him on the phone.
My Rhea could not keep her hands off the cake. She wanted to touch him and it was hard to keep her off. In fact, I just covered the cake with fondant and ran to the drawer to get a tool. Guess what?
She touched it!!! YUP!!
Normally, I would not mind, but it's summer here!! Meaning it's hot and humid so the fondant is all sticky and condensation is killing.
Those of you living in similar conditions know exactly what I'm talking about. Those of you that don't - please say thank god you enjoy better weather than the rest of us.
So the fondant at the bottom of the foam stuck to her hand. Like the palm of her hand!! Yup, I had a big patch that just came off. Of course, I had to do some fondant recovery, off-camera. My mood was so off, that the first thing I did was put the camera off saying. Ah well, no point in making this tutorial anymore.
But then I managed to patch up as much as I could and figured - well, those interested might just find this tutorial anyways. Can you see the bottom of the ball? It is kinda shiny. and not so smooth! Right? Now you know why!

About this cake
- Cake Recipe - yes, I am using my sphere cake recipe - chocolate flavor for this one.
- Buttercream - This is my Velvet American Buttercream - chocolate flavor with crushed chocolate inside.
- Fondant - This is my homemade fondant from scratch recipe but you can also use my Marshmallow Fondant which has good elasticity.
- Colors - you will need lemon yellow for him - this is straight out from the bottom usually. I used Magic Colours but most brands have a standard yellow. For the board, you can use any color leftover fondant.
- Wires - For the arms and legs I taped together 3 26 g wires with florist tape. These wires and tape are used to make sugar flowers and can be found in most cake decorating stores.

Cake Structure - emoji cake tutorial
- Thread rod size ½ inch thick - 14 inches long (links below)
- Washers and nuts - 8 each
- A foam ball - the same size as the cake. My cake pan was 7-inch ball pan but I had only an 8-inch ball so I had to trim the ball a bit.
- 10-inch cake board - Masonite or similar - one that will take the pressure and weight of the cake above.
- Cake circle as size as the top of the foam ball.
- Ribbon for the board.

Step by step instructions
- Make a hole in the center of the cake board - the hole should be the same size or smaller so the threaded rods fits snug.
- Attach the rod to the board with washers and nuts on either side of the board. So you will use 4 each
- Cut the ball - you need only about ⅓ of the ball to use as the base.
- Make a hole in the center of the ball. I offset mine by an inch so it would look like the leg is not in the center but don't think it made much of a difference.
- Trim to size and secure it on the threaded rod with nuts and washers again that's 4 each again on either side.
- Place a cake circle the same size as the ball where the cake will be placed. This is so the cake won't touch the foam.
- Tip - Make sure all the washers and nuts are securely tightened. This is because these do tend to get loose with the weight of the cake. No matter how tight I think I have made it - it always has a way out, so I usually get my husband to tighten them even more.
- Tip - As I have shown in the video - to ensure you have a perfect ball shape - use your ball pan to layer the cake - then place it in the ball pan with the foam - check to make sure the edges of the ball pan meet - if not trim some (watch video as I have done this there)
Food safety
Probably the most important part of making this cake. No cake must come in direct contact with the threaded rod, nuts, washers or foam. There are many ways to ensure this, you can wrap these with foil, cling wrap, tape. Today I have used white chocolate - I just poured white chocolate on it all and let it dry. For the bottom of the cake - I wrapped sticky tape before I wrapped fondant for the leg.
