Bas Relief Cake
I posted this Bas Relief Cake about two weeks ago on my Facebook page. I have many of you very interested in how to make it and where to find the molds.
What is Bas Relief – Heres’ what I found in terms of explanation for you.
A French term from the Italian basso-relievo (“low relief”), bas relief is a sculpture technique in which figures and/or other design elements are just barely more prominent than the (overall flat) background.
Bas relief is created either by carving away material (wood, stone, ivory, jade, etc.) or adding material to the top of an otherwise smooth surface (say, strips of clay to stone). This is a technique as old as humankind’s artistic explorations, and is closely
and of course I finished it with my lovely spray of flowers and a David Austin Rose. You can find the PDF tutorial on how to make the David Austin Rose in my online shop.
I will be honest this technique is time consuming – It does take a lot of mold work to get the whole area covered. So if you plan to use this technique do take into account that you will spend a lot more time on this cake than your usual cakes. Of course the end result is gorgeous and makes it all worth it of course.
How to do the Bas Relief Cake?
Now I personally learned this technique in an online Craftsy class called Decorating in Three Dimensions by Maggie Austin. It’s an amazing class packed with lots of information how to do this cake as well as the Stained Glass technique. She also shared how to make the spray.
Where to find the Bas Relief Molds.
I didnt’ have many Bas Relief Molds so here are some that I used and some that might help.As you can see I have used a little of many molds here. This is to give you an idea of what to look for. Of course you can find molds in plenty on line so keep an eye for deals and such.
Well, I do hope you find this post useful in some way. Of course I cannot show you how to do a cake that I learned in class but I can share the information of the class with you. It is an amazing class. And Maggi is absolutely amazing.
Happy Caking
