Hi Veena, Thank you for all of your postings! I am making cakes for my children's birthdays, I was planning on using the vanilla buttercream frosting for the cakes, but I was wondering if I can add color to it? The theme is Mickey and Minnie Mouse so I need to have Black and Red frosting. What would be the best way to change the color of the icing? I know there are food coloring, coloring gels and things like that. I wasn't sure if there was one that is better than another.
Yes of course Dana. You can use either gel or powdered food colors for your frostings. If you plan to use a lot of colors. I suggest making a thicker consistency for your frosting first so that once you add the colors it will be just right. Do not use water-based colors as they will make the frosting too thin.
Good afternoon Veena. I was wondering whether you could do a tutorial or a class on fondant covering cake. I would appreciate any kind of assistance especially being a beginner and not having worked much with fondant. I did a cake recently and when I covered it with the fondant it started sweating. Having read up on condensation I do understand a bit more. Also just guidance on things like whether to put fondant directly on a cake from the fridge and should it be in an airconditioned room etc. I would appreciate any kind of assistance with these issues we come across.
Your classes that I have done before are super awesome and you are the only one who I know of that would give this kind of assistance without hesitation.
Not sure I understand Joan. All my recipes are here on the blog. Many of them have videos and progress pictures. Please browse through the categories to see which recipes you like. Thanks
Hi,
I'm very interested in baking, don't know the basics. I want to learn how to make cake, frosting, cupcakes, brownies etc. So, where should I start?
There is lots of information on this blog for baking. I also have two masterclasses - one for baking cakes and one for baking bread. I think that would be a good place to start.
I'm making my son a '3D' cake for his birthday (a train using the Wilton 3D train). Which of your chocolate cake recipes do you recommend? The Wilton site suggests only Pound cake for 3D cakes.....but not sure if that's something a 3 year old would appreciate (I rarely make dense cakes).
Hey Sherry, I have a chocolate cake perfect for carving. It's somewhere between a pound and a lighter chocolate cake. I think you might like it. Hope this helps.
